My smarthome evolution to actually having smart gadgets and automation is detailed in <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/my-smarthome-evolution-part-2-getting-smart\/\">Part 2<\/a> of this series. In <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/my-smarthome-evolution-part-3-current-state\/\">Part 3<\/a> of this series, I went into detail about the current state of my smarthome. class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve learned so much in the last year and I have many projects in mind that I haven&#8217;t yet had time for. At the same time, I need to upgrade my existing solutions while always looking out for new and better solutions. A combination of getting to desired projects, performing upgrades, and transitioning to new and better solutions constitutes my foreseeable future smarthome evolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-base-background-color has-background\"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Note<\/strong>: This article focuses on my journey to where my smart home is now. If you are interested in what I would do if starting over, check out my article about <a href=\"https:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/creating-the-perfect-smart-home-10-key-steps-when-starting-from-scratch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">creating the perfect smart home from scratch<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Smarthome_Evolution_Home_Networking\"><\/span>Smarthome Evolution: Home Networking<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m in a happy place with my network right now. My <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/tp-link-eap-225-v3-ac1350-access-point-review\/\">TP-Link Access points <\/a>are rock solid and just work. I have good wireless AC and N coverage throughout my house. My router, <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/pfsense-home-router\/\">pFsense<\/a>, does everything I want to do. I don&#8217;t have a need to run any new wiring as I have Cat 6 going to most rooms. However, I&#8217;d expect there to be a few changes over the next couple of years.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Upgrade_to_my_access_point_infrastructure\"><\/span>Upgrade to my access point infrastructure<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m happy with my access point controller, Omada, but I still need to keep it up to date. Also, I currently have it running in a VM, but there is a Docker image for it. I&#8217;ll probably migrate over to the Docker image for ease of maintenance, upgrades, and portability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, if over the next couple of years I purchase a couple of WiFi 6 clients, I may upgrade one of my access points to WiFi 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reevaluate_virtual_router\"><\/span>Reevaluate virtual router<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/how-why-i-built-virtual-router\/\">Virtual pfSense has worked out well<\/a>, but it does have some inconveniences. I&#8217;m the only one who knows how to restart the router if needed. With an appliance, anyone could do it. Also, I&#8217;ll need to migrate the router VM as I plan to upgrade the OS on the host where it&#8217;s currently running. This might be a good time to look at buying <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/5-great-choices-for-pfsense-hardware\/\">hardware for my pfSense router<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Keep_my_eye_on_better_failover_Internet_options\"><\/span>Keep my eye on better failover Internet options<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/cellular-backup-internet\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"469\" src=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/NetgearLB1120-1024x469.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/NetgearLB1120-1024x469.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/NetgearLB1120-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/NetgearLB1120-768x352.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/NetgearLB1120-1536x704.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/NetgearLB1120.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">My current cellular failover modem<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>5G may be available for home Internet in my area in a year or two. At that point, I seriously consider it for my primary and\/or <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/cellular-backup-internet\/\">backup internet<\/a>. Also, I&#8217;ll be on the lookout for a lower cost and\/or higher bandwidth 4G plan than what I&#8217;m currently using for backup Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highly_available_docker\"><\/span>Highly available docker<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As I move more of my services to docker, it is time to look into options for making my containers highly available in a failure situation. The best options for this seem to be Kubernetes and Docker Swarm. I don&#8217;t know much about either, but I plan to dip my feet into one or both of these in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Smarthome_Evolution_Home_Security\"><\/span>Smarthome Evolution: Home Security<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My alarm system has served me well and I have no plans to change it. My video surveillance system has also worked well, but <a href=\"https:\/\/zoneminder.readthedocs.io\/en\/1.32.3\/\">Zoneminder<\/a> is another candidate to move to Docker. Also, a couple of my cameras are aging and aren&#8217;t even HD, so it is time to replace them. I&#8217;ll be looking into inexpensive models that support RTSP, like my current <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2qk50XF\">SV3C Outdoor WiFi Camera (1080p).<\/a>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, I may finally install a smart doorbell with a camera to further improve my security. I&#8217;ll be looking for one that isn&#8217;t dependent on the cloud and can integrate with Zoneminder. I also may see what I can do with facial recognition for my existing cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Smarthome_Evolution_IoT\"><\/span>Smarthome Evolution: IoT<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IoT.png\" alt=\"smarthome evolution: IOT\" class=\"wp-image-2470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IoT.png 1024w, https:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IoT-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IoT-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I can already tell that my next obsession will be LED lights. I&#8217;m already starting to look into the <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/10-minute-led-lights-for-any-holiday-with-wled\/\">WLED software<\/a> that can give me cool effects and integrate with <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/why-home-assistant-is-the-perfect-smart-home-hub-for-me\/\">Home Assistant<\/a>. Watching Dr. Zzs video below made it seem pretty easy to get started. I know there are other options, but this probably where I&#8217;ll start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beginner&#039;s Guide to Christmas Lights - and LED Shows for Every Holiday\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tXvtxwK3jRk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Other devices I&#8217;ll probably get into include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Another <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/deebot-n79s-the-best-value-in-robotic-vacuums\/\">robot vacuum<\/a> for another floor in my home, and for mopping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A couple more smart switches, as not all my light switches are smart yet (gasp!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I want notification when my smoke alarm or CO detector goes off. It is too expensive to outfit my house with smart versions of these, like the<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2XAke6T\"> Nest Protect<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2KAqYwe\">Z-Wave detectors<\/a>. So I&#8217;m going to look into a device like the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/343zJ9N\">Roost smart battery<\/a> or even a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2D0VivM\">Wyze Cam<\/a>, which has the ability to notify based on smoke\/CO sounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I have a couple of WiFi smart switches that require the cloud. I want to learn to use <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/O5GYh470m5k\">Tuya-convert<\/a> to make these work without cloud access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;ll also be on the lookout for innovations in smart displays and smart speakers  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Smarthome_Evolution_Automation\"><\/span>Smarthome Evolution: Automation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I plan to keep writing and refining my automations to keep making my house smarter and smarter. While I like developing my <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/why-home-assistant-is-the-perfect-smart-home-hub-for-me\/\">Home Assistant<\/a> automations in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/YAML\">YAML<\/a>, I&#8217;m really interested to try creating automations with <a href=\"https:\/\/nodered.org\/\">Node-RED<\/a>. Some new automations I have in mind are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/how-home-assistant-runs-my-irrigation-controller\/\">Sprinkler scheduling with weather control (Edit: Done)<\/a><\/strong>. I am able to manually start each of the irrigation sprinkler zones manually with Home Assistant, but I currently rely on a cloud service for regular scheduling. To eliminate the need for the cloud service, I need to be able to make irrigation schedules that are smart enough to take the weather into account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>LED lighting schedules<\/strong>. I recently got into <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/10-minute-led-lights-for-any-holiday-with-wled\/\">individually addressable LEDs<\/a>.  I&#8217;d like to install more lights and set schedules and triggers for when the lights come on. For instance, I&#8217;d like the lights to have particular patterns for various holidays and birthdays in the house.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use motion sensors to automate more lights<\/strong>. I&#8217;d like my house to know when to turn on and off more lights and not have to have anyone in the house think about it. Home Assistant will continue to improve its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.home-assistant.io\/blog\/2019\/11\/20\/release-102\/\">new official Android app<\/a> and I plan to adopt it. At this point, I really can&#8217;t imagine using any other <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/pick-smarthome-hub\/\">smarthome hub<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Smarthome_Evolution_Multimedia\"><\/span>Smarthome Evolution: Multimedia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m at the beginning of my <a href=\"http:\/\/hometechhacker.com\/cordcutting-cable-journey\/\">cord-cutting journey<\/a>, and the streaming service wars are just beginning to heat up. First and foremost I am going to keep evaluating streaming services to make sure my family has the right mix. Sometime over the next couple of years, I&#8217;ll replace them with 4K capable smart models, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2XK6new\">TCL 6 series Roku TVs<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2qxkd7S\">Denon s750 A\/V<\/a> receiver.
